TECHNICAL GUIDE

Steel Thickness Guide for Cabinets and Lockers

How professional buyers should evaluate steel thickness together with construction, reinforcement, load, forming and the finished product.

Thickness is one input, not the complete specification

Steel thickness influences stiffness, weight, forming and cost, but it does not describe a cabinet on its own. Bends, returns, reinforcement, panel span, joining and support geometry can materially change the performance of the finished product.

Clarify how the value is measured

Ask whether the stated value refers to bare steel before coating, a nominal purchasing specification or a measured finished panel. Agree the measurement method and tolerance so quotations from different suppliers are comparable.

Map thickness to each component

A cabinet can use different material specifications for the body, doors, shelves, drawers, base and reinforcement. A single headline number can hide those differences.

  • Body and side panels
  • Doors and drawer fronts
  • Shelves and load-bearing supports
  • Base, top and internal reinforcements

Validate against the intended load

State the expected shelf load, drawer load, door use and any anchoring requirement. The supplier can then propose a construction and inspection plan that matches the application rather than optimizing only for shipping weight or unit price.

采购常见问题

常见问题

Should every panel use the same thickness?+

Not necessarily. Different parts perform different functions, so the approved bill of materials may specify several values.

Does powder coating count toward steel thickness?+

That depends on how the supplier states the figure. The RFQ should distinguish base metal from the finished coated measurement.

How can I compare suppliers?+

Use the same drawing, component schedule, measurement method, load requirement and tolerance for every quotation.
